Food Intolerance vs. Food Allergy

Many people have sensitivities to certain kinds of foods, which can cause a range of symptoms. But what is a food allergy and what is food intolerance? The difference is in the body’s response to the food. Allergies are the more severe of the two: the food triggers the immune system, releasing immunoglobulin E antibodies. The resulting symptoms, including hives and respiratory difficulties, appear quickly. Food intolerance, however, is the more common of the two and does not involve the immune system. Symptoms include diarrhea and bloating. A doctor can help determine the cause of food sensitivities. Nutrition Horizon, Dec. 10, 2007
